Discussion

Xtof, I ran this through a translator, and from what I can understand, I think that I am working towards similar goals. In particular, some of the people that I am working with locally, I am trying to apply the idea of MailingListThenWiki (or mailing list then whatever more complex online community tool people are not yet familiar with).

One thing that I have found that helps is ScreenCasting?, that is a narrated movie example of you performing different tasks in the software. See: Wikipedia:Screencasting (a free screencasting tools that works in both Linux and windows is Wink).

There are some inexpensive screencasting solutions out there. Same thing can be done with different desktop sharing programs, but in real time.

Also, I am finding that conference calls coupled with mailing lists are good ways to let people get a lot of questions out easily, and get an understanding of what happens in wiki, or whatever you are trying to teach them.

Feel free to use the course material that I helped write for Stanford University, regarding the use of wikis. It is located at https://www.socialtext.net/medialiteracy/index.cgi?wikiSamRose

Sam, thanks for answering. It’s late now. Agree on VideoCast?. Two things ToDo :

I’d be happy if we could make a direct connexion with LaurentLunati. Will try to talk soon. Think our pages should be MindMapped and interlinked in the WikiNet. I asked for a MindMap at work several months ago but still nothing. It could come. I really need holidays. I feel a bit stressed and headache at office in the WikiNow with such poor tools ! A future CarteMentale? will help for our future multilingual exchanges in the WikiNet ;) Good night Sam. Happy to feel your presence on this small emotional workspace. – ChristopheDucamp

Xtof, CarteMentale? looks AWESOME as a multilingaul/WikiNet. Some time we should chat via skype, so that I can try to align some of my activities with yours more effectively.

I’d be happy to meet LaurentLunati. I have FreeMind? (see: Free Mind, which is OpenSource? and free, works on multiple operating systsems. When you are ready to create a MindMap, let me know, and I’ll definitely help construct it.

I have found, for instance this: http://wikkawiki.org/MindMapRecentChanges

It allows you to download the FreeMind? MindMap, modify the file in freemind, then upload your changes back to the inline MindMap (their Wiki engine is Wikka Wiki, but I assume it could be possible to do it in ProWiki? or OddMuse).

See also http://freemind.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Requests_for_enhancements (section 6.19 mindmap wikis)

And http://wikkawiki.org/ShowRecentChangesMindMapAction

Anyway, we can take it all step by step. As you often say, we must preserve our GeekHealth. If you put all of the “to dos” that connect to me on a page somewhere, and let me know where that is, I’ll be sure to help out where I can over time. Good night :-) – SamRose

MattisManzel: There is a Freemind install script for Dapper published 2006-10-18 which worked fine for me on Kubuntu http://blog.siliconchaos.net/articles/2006/05/22/setting-up-freemind-in-ubuntu-dapper

Christophe : Hi Sam and Mattis. A lot of ideas and links here. Thanks. Think this DatePage is becoming a real mess and should be refactored soon on MindMap… The issue on top was dedicated to LaurentLunati. I promised him also a MindMap on a particuliar issue : a validation process of document in any corporate communication department… Think it could help us to work on strong basis for wiki-killer vs email-collaboration which is really becoming a nightmare ! Will report soon (hopefully this week-end) a personal experience without mentioning my employer… I really need MindMap-wiki which could be used by normal people :-)
