Usability

I’m very interested in feedback about the usability of the entire setup. Is the CSS ok? Are the formatting rules ok? Is the documentation ok? Did you look for information on particular issues and did not find them? Or you did find them but it took you way too long?

I’d like to fix these issues. Edit this page to let me know about them. – AlexSchroeder

Feedback

Hi, Alex! I love OddMuse so far, but I’m having a little trouble. Where do I go to see how to do basics? I made my own little oddwiki here using the Startup, but I can’t even figure out how to create a new page. I’ve modified my home page, but how do I make a brand new unrelated page? And how do I enable comments? The Setup page says: “To enable comments, edit the CommentsPrefix? page, and put the prefix on the page (eg. “Comments on” or “Talk about”).” I think I understand the latter, but have no clue how to “edit the CommentsPrefix? page.” It’s not in the list on the Administration page. Help! Is it even intended to have a comment/talk page paired with every substantive page, like on Wikipedia? Thanks! Laura

Okay, after posting the above I saw the “?” after the term “CommentsPrefix?,” so I figured out that if I put that term on my homepage, I could create it, which I did. Took me several tries to get part 2 of the instructions down, but I finally figured it out. Where can I find a list of terms like that, that will automatically create pages? And I still don’t know how to create an unrelated page. And how do I sign my comments? Laura

Hi Laura! To create new pages, edit an existing page and add a link to the new page – even though it doesn’t exist yet. The resulting link with the questionmark will allow you to create the new page. The two simplest ways of creating links:

  1. Use mixed capitalization: HomePageHomePage
  2. Or use double square brackets: [[Forum]]Forum

As to signing comments, there’s not special rule to sign. Just write your name. ;) – AlexSchroeder

(I keep forgetting to use a space and wondering why my stuff isn’t formatting properly.) Thanks, Alex! Your signatures make a pretty link, but I guess that’s because you have a page at your name. (Do you plan to implement anything like the tildes on Mediawiki?) Where can I go to get a complete list of syntax rules (I’ve found some) and basic “how to” rules? And please allow me to complement you not only on your programming skills but also your English. I spent a semester in Wien 15 years ago (and spent time in Switzerland where I loved Lausanne and Geneva and wished I could have spent more time in Zurich), but I wouldn’t dare attempt a real conversation auf Deutsch! Es tut mir leid! Tschuss! Laura

Well, all the so-called “oddwikis” also act as interlinks, so you can write LaurasRepository:Laura to sign here. And you can sign using [[Laura]] on your own site LaurasRepository:HomePage. There’s an extension to translate ~~~~ into a signature (Oddmuse:Signature Extension) – but it is not installed for Oddwikis. Once you have your own installation, you can install the extensions you want, of course.

I regret to say that I have not compiled a list text formatting rules for the oddwikis – all I have is a list of links to various Oddmuse manual pages at the beginning of the Setup page. Here they are again: Oddmuse:Text Formatting Rules, Oddmuse:Link Pattern, Oddmuse:Markup Extension, Oddmuse:Usemod Markup Extension, Oddmuse:Image Extension. If somebody were to collect them and put them on a local TextFormattingRules page, that would be great. ;)

And thanks for the compliment. :) – AlexSchroeder
