Troubleshooting

Accented characters in page titles turn into questionmarks: ?

This wiki uses UTF-8 to encoded characters. This means that all non-ASCII characters such as accented characters, cyrillic characters, Arabic characters, Chinese characters – are encoded in a specific way.

If you create a new page by editing the URL, there is a little problem: Technically, an URL may not contain non-ASCII characters. Some browsers will therefore encode the characters using UTF-8, and there will be no problem. Other browsers will encode such characters using Latin-1, or not at all, and this will lead to the problem you are seeing: When the wiki tries to display the UTF-8 encoded page title, it will find bytes it cannot display because these bytes are actually the Latin-1 encoding of a character. Many browsers will therefore display a questionmark or an empty box instead.

Solution:

  1. Delete the page
  2. On an existing page, put a link to the [[Nëw pägë]] and save.
  3. Follow the new link and you will find the page you want with the correct encoding.

You can’t save your edits and you get the above message. That means the wiki crashed when somebody else wanted to save something. This is not necessarily a sign for alarm. Do let us know on the Forum page if you keep seeing it, however.
