Hajj

500 Member Parliament elected in 998.8 for the Kentauri Caliphate. The body is currently split between the progressive "New Party", or the Whites, and the party of the military and landholders, or the Greens. There is a third "republican" party, or "Blacks" which holds a few seats and sides with the Whites. As of 998.11 there are 237 Whites, 221 Greens, 32 Blacks and the rest are "independents" mainly representatives of "The Old Way" (See the Faithful).

The word "Hajj" in Islam is the pilgrimage to Mecca, and the body was so named because members must first take the pilgrimage before they could be seated. Since Ishtar has no Mecca, instead it is to al Hijra - the spot where, according to the traditions, the first member of the Faithful set foot on Ishtar, sent by Gabriel to convert this world.
