ServerForTheHive

server for the hive

A multi-engine wiki-hive needs a server

MattisManzel: What server to get for the project? What extraordinary features should such a server have to allow many different engines to run on it in hive-mode? Many technical questions to discuss and agree on.

One server probably isn’t going to last too long if you’re intending on having hundreds of wikis, especially if a lot of those are using MediaWiki. WikiCities has four servers for 500 wikis but we’re about to increase that to 20 as soon as we can. AngelaBeesley

MattisManzel: Sure, but for a couple of hundred it takes some time. The idea is rather on gathering different wiki development-lines in a common project. It’s a bit about the beauty of the outwards face of wiki to the big big non-wiki world. It says choose, you are free to. Like every wiki does when you click edit.
Practically, if someone comes along with a new wiki you can be sure about it will have 300 pages next week, I’d say, rush over to wikicities immediately, sure. Maybe supply a possibility to migrate to wikicities (or to a hive running the respective engine only, a mono-engine wiki-hive ;)) when a certain size is reached. Partly this multi-engine wiki-hive could serve as an experimental forefield for wikicities. But only partly.

Maybe you could even spare one of the 20 servers for this so I don’t have to buy it?

An issue might be security. Who should have access to the server? On Wikicities, only Wikia staff have access, but if you’re aiming on something more open, you might want to be more flexible about this, and think of how you can keep one wiki secure whilst allowing someone shell access to another wiki. MattisManzel: Which takes us rightaway into hive-folks.
