Bill and Carl's odyssey
Well, it’s over. 4,183.5 miles in seven nights and eight days.
That was preceded by two days and 1,185 miles getting to Denver and two days and 1,222 miles getting back home. Twelve days, 6,500 miles; one really bad case of TB.

The trip to the starting point
Thursday, April 27
- Quartz Hill to Richfield: What’s a little cloudiness and a little wind to start a trip? Precursors, that’s what.
Friday, April 28
- Richfield to Denver: Utah’s vast red rock country leading into the Rockies and rain, sleet and snow.
Getting on the road
Saturday, April 29
- Denver to Smith Center: A trailer full of water beds and other furniture; what could be better? Making the right turn would be one.
Sunday, April 30
- Smith Center to Champagne: A night’s quiet rest in Smith Center, but I’m being redundant.
Monday, May 1
- Champagne to Morton: Caterpiller ships everything to everywhere else from Morton, Illinois. We’ll drop off the now-empty trailer and go to a truck stop that has actual showers And they give away shower access when you buy fuel. Carl will deal with that and we’ll both enjoy cleaning up.
Tuesday, May 2
- Morton to Kenmare: We’ll blow through Ohio and end the day on the far side of North Dakota.
Wednesday, May 3
- Kenmare to Leduc: Kenmare, North Dakota, the wind is blowing (but I’m being redundant). We have just a few miles to get to the Canadian border at Portal, N.D.
Thursday, May 4
- Leduc to Nanton: We visit the Largest Garden Railway in Canada and walk the streets of Nanton with the rest of the antiques.
Friday, May 5
- Nanton to Hardin: We see hundreds of antelope along the way and a stop at the famous Eddie’s Corner for a little relief.
Saturday, May 6
- Hardin to Denver: We slide by Sheridan, Wyoming, and check the Martin house in Laramie before getting back to Denver.
The trip home
Sunday, May 7
- Denver to Durango: “The most beautiful drive in America.” That’s Carl’s view and I won’t argue.
Monday, May 8
- Durango to Needles: The stark beauty of the Four Corners country viewed through a shrinking gas supply.
Tuesday, May 9
- Needles to Quartz Hill: Gas at $3.999. Thank goodness I don’t need any.
