Goode Adam

GOODE, ADAM: aka "Kuro". Long-time CTRL-A Concession Manager. He ran the concession as an independent business, and at a profit, with only minimal financial reporting to the main organization. The profits he earned, he re-invested in building the business, until at its peak it was an elaborate dog and pony show featuring a wide variety of hot, room-temperature, and frozen food, pizza, pop, [[Pocky?]], instant noodles, and so on and so on. It took a lot of labour to set up and take down (for instance, moving the freezer around…), and the main club never had a proper inventory.

Adam had a falling-out with the then CTRL-A executive in late 2001/early 2002, over demands that he scale back his operation and report his activities accurately to the CTRL-A treasurer. This was around the same time that Joe Chen also left, but not related to Joe's departure. It also came out at this time that Adam had been operating "the CTRL-A concession" in other venues; for instance, he would go to Gemini Jetpack, where they have Magic tournaments and such, and sell candy there, representing himself as representing CTRL-A. Gemini Jetpack had tolerated Adam doing that because they thought he really was representing CTRL-A and they were trying to be friendly and supportive towards CTRL-A; but CTRL-A hadn't known about or authorized it.

When all this came out, Adam offered to continue operating the concession on a bunch of conditions, including that he be granted complete independence, and that he get apologies both from the organization and from some specific individuals he felt had wronged him. The offer was rejected, and CTRL-A began operating its concession under tighter supervisions from the Treasurer, with many of the same volunteer staff who had previously worked for Adam's operation. Adam went on to start his own importing business, called "Kuro's Pocky"; the Pocky being sold by CTRL-A as of [[Fall_2004?]] was purchased from him.

During Matt Skala's presidency ([[Summer_2004?]]) there was trouble getting enough volunteers to operate the concession. At once show the elected Concession Manager (Norika Zhang) did not show up, with no announcement or warning, and Tim Dysinski stepped in as Acting Concession Manager and operated it for a while with no other volunteers or support. At a subsequent show it was decided to close the concession pending more volunteers. Adam heard about that decision and approached Matt - through unofficial channels, not via his CTRL-A email address - with an offer to take it over, acting as an independent outside contractor. That offer was discussed in the subsequent CTRL-A meeting; the point was raised that having an outside contractor provide food service like that would raise lots of bureaucratic issues, with the University (specifically Food Services, who have an official monopoly on on-campus food sales), FEDS (who want to be involved in everything), and the Region of Waterloo Health Department (see Health Department Form). Matt suggested that we tell Adam, fine, that's a great idea, but of course YOU will have to deal with ALL the paperwork and prove to us that you've done so… However, the decision made at the meeting was to simply tell Adam "No, thank you."

Concession continued to have a number of problems up until [[Winter_2005?]] when, after direct discussion with Adam, the club decided to allow him to run his own private concession at the shows, provided that he handle all concession-related business himself.
