Hé this is a first test of a walking-page in the WikiNet. Still enthusiast to try a first WikiThinkTank experience. I’d be happy not to be alone for nomination in the suggested members ! SamRose just suggested me some nice insights on my cw home page. FrédéricBaud has written the MissionStatement. Still a lot of work to read and have a sort of global vision like drawing a first BarCampBankSocialMap? as LionKimbro did on CommunityWikiSocialMap?.
Please believe we drive here to build this group with enthusiasm. So, please feel really free to refactor, delete and complete. WikiNode/TourBusStop connexions should be build later. – ChristopheDucamp
So far, I like the direction, the spirit, and most of the intent of BarCampBank, and I’ll reiterate that I am on board as a supporter and participant, of course.
However, I wanted to talk a little about the creation of a board. It is my personal hope that we will structure the “board” in a way that embraces the spirit of what BarCamp is. It is my hope that we figure out and focus on ways to keep things open and community-driven. As such, I would like to recommend that the board be a “leaderless” board. That the board structure NOT be a hierarchy with a President, etc. That “board” participants should be equal. I recommend that the “board” be an “un-board”, that is, open to people who want to contribute to projects that fall under the mission statement.
TaraHunt has a recent blog posting that describes the nature of BarCamp intitiatives:
http://www.horsepigcow.com/2006/10/embracing-chaos.html
Also, look at the comments to that blog posting.
Let us acknowledge that money and power can corrupt and bring out the worst in people. And let us then work on ways that allow people to gain the most positive value from their combined money and power, while avoiding corruption. I think arranging ourselves in a classic hierarchical manner as the “BarCampBankBoard?” could spell disaster in the long run for enabling the mission statement of BarCampBank. So, in my mind, the “BankBoard?” is an open support system, that creates models and best practices, and helps support knowledge and tangible and intangible value sharing among a growing and open community/network. This is tying together insights from Communiting and PinkoMarketing. In particular, the PinkoMarketing idea of “get out of the way and let the community take you where you need to go.”
Of course, right now we are the community. So, we drive ourselves, but, we should drive ourselves in a way that does not obstruct new comers. I just mostly wanted to get these thoughts out of my head, and on to one of our wiki sites. I would love to know what others think – SamRose
I agree that everything should be made easy for new comers to join and let them be active and vocal. Personnally, I don’t think that having an elected board for a given time frame is a bad idea. This can let a closely knitted group coordinate frequently through other means than wikis to promote the community (wikis are not necessarily the most adapted collaboration tool for this kind of action). Now, this is democracy, it is the duty of a board to be at the service of the community for the elected time. Plus, it must definitely be open to any contributors and integrate benevolents to the board dynamics. If the service time is short enough to have regularly new elections, we should not witness any deviance before a long long time. – FredericBaud
Frederic, I also want to add that we are looking at creating a “board”, or governance system, before we even know exactly what we are trying to govern. What is the “board” for? Why is it needed? What are the alternatives to a “board”? Why do we (collectively, indvidually) want a “board”?
If we determine why we need a board, and what for, then I agree that an elected board could be a good idea. But, I think that an elected hierarchy is a bad idea. If board members share equal “power”, I think it can set a better example for the types of frameworks that some of us have been discussing. So, a “board” could be elected to allow a “closely knitted group coordinate frequently”, but I do not see a need for a hierachy (such as a president, vice president, etc). So, this is my proposal for the structure of a BarCampBank board. A leaderless group. A collaborative, group-governed Open value Network (http://www.communitywiki.org/odd/SocialSynergy/OpenValueNetwork). other than that, I agree with your framework of limited “terms”, with the agreement that the board is at the service of the community, ect. Just that the board does not have to be hierarchy itself (unless required by law). Hierachy breeds hierarchical thinking and action. And, a hierarchy should only be employed if it is the best objective solution to the problem, IMO.
I agree that “promotion” may not be best done through a wiki. But, I know that some participants agree that the bulk of collaborative input is best done through wikis. Collaboraive input meaning: brainstorming, TheoryBuilding, planning and outlines of plans, DocumentMode co-created documents, and general group communication. But, I do see that there could easily possibly be roles for blogging, email lists/email newsletters, video conferencing, teleconferencing, in-person meetups, IRC, and many other communications tools and techniques. – SamRose
Also, let me write that I am not saying above that we don’t “need” to elect a board. I just want us to create some kind of working description of what BarCampBankBoard? is, and what it will do. And, I propose that it is important that we do that prior to creating/electing the first BarCampBank board. – SamRose
I think it could be interesting to have a board or even a president make decisions like the time for a coming FlashMeeting and post it on a predefined page. Personally, I would benefit from having someone I can refer to, to know if I can help, to know if I’m not doing something redundant or to know who I could more specifically collaborate with; instead of having to chase for similar information on different wiki pages or wikis. I don’t really see the board as a hierachical instrument but as a hub, and the president as the hub within the hub. We could see the role of leading BarCampBank community more like the role of a conductor than a command and control organ. – FredericBaud
I think that your idea (I believe it was your idea) for having an announcement email list is a good one, so that you could expect all announcement about flashmeetings, or other coordinating items to come through that list. Because, as you have mentioned, not everyone is used to using wikis, and may struggle with tracking them across the WikiNet. we should make this a point of discussion among the group at some point. There are several options available for creating an announcement mailing list. We’ve discussed a theme similar to this at CommunityWiki, under http://communitywiki.org/en/MailingListThenWiki
Although, I’ll recommend that discussion take place in the WikiNet that we are discussing creating, as opposed to a mailing list. We are talking about creating this WikiNet, but we are also talking about creating ways to help people use it effectively, and creating a centralized way to track what is happening within it, so that you won’t have to hop around among many different wikis. I’ll leave it up to ChristopheDucamp to fully explain his current/early methods for spreading this across many wiki communities. But, I can guess that he is doing so in a way that will effectively tie the participants, knowledge bases, and talents of these communities together. I can agree that we should eventually keep the bulk of discussion to some central wiki-place, for the reasons that you’ve stated (eg, you have to adopt the markup language of each wiki, which slows you down, and you have to chase the action around). But, this is ChristopheDucamp’s area of expertise, and I know from my own experience that the methods and approach he is using here can be very effective as catalyst for cooperation and collaboration among these different communities.
I’ll also suggest, just in general, that at least for keeping track of many wikis, that you can drop the RSS feed of the recent changes of all of these wikis into an RSS feed reader, or into a google personalized home page, and you can keep track of changes very easily in one place that way. This is what I am doing, and it is very effective for me. It still doesn’t solve the issue of havign to switch markup usage from wiki to wiki when you want to actually add content or participate in discussion, but I think we will address this with an implementation of WikiNet technology, which we are discussing in different places right now. Of course, input from everyone in the group about the usability of that system will be highly valuable, too.
Regarding an elected board (even with a “president”)I think that the stucture you suggest above, and the role that you suggest for a board in general is a good one, and one that I am willing to work with. – SamRose

Coucou Sam, a little strange refactoring. Still learning here as a newbie WikiBiker in the WikiNet. Let’s say now we could suggest to recentralize some future canonical branches in your server who could be based in Michigan ?
After this first agreement to host a ProWiki server, our implied position here on cw is just now to study and follow-up with Alex the opportunity to host nice OddWiki structures with PinkoMarketing and CommunityMarketing experiences to drive some real cash and transparency documents for those which will help to build blocks[1]
Still convinced it could very helpful to take some MutualInspiration and LinkLanguage from this WikiNet ballad process.
Sure now on one thing : we have to find out real money to help independants and volunteer.
Our next agenda will now be based on BarCampBankFlashMeeting3 where I’d be happy if you could be our “chair” to speak cash and “seeding-structures” via pehraps a WikiCalc ?
The idea : invite now here all CommunityWiki members. All WikiNet members are naturally invited to join us freely. FredericBaud suggested to have third inter-CommunityOnline experience to focus on finalizing a BarCampBank MissionStatement. Let’s arrange it here.
In love with this wiki-biking at night. I’d be very happy if OlivierAuber could help us to build a FractalAggregator for our future vizualisation “SharedAwarenessSystem”.
Cheers and bonsoir à la LangueFrançaise. zzzzz. – xtof
[new:SamRose:2006-11-13 22:14 UTC]
I am all for finalizing BarCampBank MissionStatement. Perhaps this is something we can do right in this wiki, without the need for a flashmeeeting?
For instance, I think we (BarCampBank group) can provide start ups, existing projects, communities, and others with help/consulting in effectively implementing the building blocks they need (microfinance, trust metrics, business models, pinko marketing, open value network set up, wiki training, etc, etc). We could create an agreement with these groups on a case-by-case basis. Initially, I was thinking:
For-profit ventures could pay us a fair pre-determined percentage of Gross revenue from profits over time up to a maximum, once they reach a certain level of revenue. This would be based on the amount of work we put into helping them, and could be shared by everyone involved in the particular job. Yet, we could also tithe a certain percentage of what we collect into a BarCampBank fund.
We could exchange time via a time bank with non-profit groups. Or, we can hep them implement ways to raise money, and they could pay us a fee from this money-raising, if money is necassary.
But then, I think about incorporating this into:
As we discussed in BarCampBankFlashMeeting1 with BarCamp:OriPekelman, we could create a version of the Solari model. We could modify the Solari model to create a BarCampBank DoTankInvestmentNetwork? model. One difference from Solari is that, our group could be based on a network of people, and not based on a location. We can help groups with Solari-concept services likeConsumerAggregation support, Small business incubation, “back office” and Pinko marketing support, as well as support in BarCampBank concepts like implementing open business models, helping other groups in creating effective knowledge commons via wiki, and WikiNet concepts, and other social software tools, information visualization, trust and value metrics, Pinko marketing, and more.
I propose that we create a structure where we define all who are currently listed as BarCampBank members become DoTankInvestmentNetwork? “A” shareholders. This means that they have a vote when our DoTankInvestmentNetwork? articles say that a vote is needed for decision making. Yet, at the same time, we try to DevolvePower in our network so that most decision making is done through ConsensusGroup when possible. When voting is needed, we can look at models like BeyondYes. Also, this governance discussion is of course open to everyone else’s input. If they leave, they sell their “A” share back to the group based on nominal value.
So, we can then create “B” shares that are based on equity pools that we collectively create and manage. (We can always change the what we name the shares, this is to demonstrate the concept). These “B” shares could be issued used to raise money when we have helped to build something up to the point that we believe it is ready to be funded. We would build it up by:
We would do this research and building up of infrastructure in open and transparent ways whenever possible. We can then serve as a more transparent venture captalist/angel investor, to help the start-up group avoid these 10 reasons to usually shy away from venture capital, by first helping them build up their enteprise/idea, then acting as an intermediary to help them fund the idea once we help them prove that it can work and generate revenue on it’s own. We issue “B” shares on behalf of the start up, and we seek investment in proven ideas. Then we pay ourselves for the work we have put into this based on a percentage of the “B” shares sold. Each person from our network who has contributed work on ech project can opt to receive a predetermined payment amount, or payment in the form of “B” shares that they can sell later.
This is a very rough draft of a model. Let’s have some dialogue with everyone involved who is interested in this idea, and see what grows out of that.
This has been moved to a local page titled PeerInvest, which I propose to use to describe all investment-related topics.
Looks like the agenda for BarCampBankFlashMeeting3 will be “Trust Metrics”. So, perhaps we can move our funding and seeding-strucutures agenda to BarCampBankFlashMeeting4? In the meantime, I will see if maybe I can get a WikiCalc instance up and running on my server, that we can use in combination with this, or whatever wiki page you’d like, to hash out details of what we need money for, and how much.
[new:SamRose:2006-11-15 21:32 UTC]
I have registered Barcampbank.com, but hav not pointed it to anything yet. This domain will not be considered owned by me, but registered by me on behalf of our group, and the common property of our group, I declare here.
I was able to get an instance of Odd Muse set up on my server here: http://s4560.gridserver.com/cgi-bin/wiki.pl
(With the assistance of people on the #oddmuse IRC channel thanks!).
So, eventually, I will figure out how to set up OddWiki hive there, for both french and english. Same thing for ProWiki.
Once we figure out what out network “business” model is, we should figure out how we are going to use these wiki spaces (Oddwiki and ProWiki), and any other tools in conjunction with our business model(s).

Here is a quick note on our TrustMetrics discussion in
I have tried to work everything we talked about into a formula:
Trust, represented as a function of:
Ti’=Fav (Ii’,s Ei’,e’ Ps R)
where:
i’ is the individual
av is aggregated value
I is verified identity from i’ (individual), such as email address, phone number, address for instance, and verification that the person is real from s (social network) such as xfn, or other means.
E is exchange ratings within the system, from both i’ (individual) and e’ (the person exchanged with). Exchange rating system coul dbe Karma Initiative, or some other.
P is Peer Group ratings of many different types from s (social net).
R is values imported from external reputation systems, such as Amazon, Opinity, possibly claimid in the future, and any others.
More vectors could be added. Each vector above could be translated into a numeric value, which would makne up the Fav score.
Here’s an example of a peer to peer bank structure that is in successful use in the US right now:

Refactored Road map discussion into http://barcamp.org/BarCampBankRoadMapDiscussion and added some of my new ideas. – SamRose
[new:ChristopheDucamp:2006-11-15 20:29 UTC] Hi Sam. Obliged to leave. Let’s say a fellow-barcampbanker has just red your above contribution and found it awesome. I intend to translate it before our next online-meeting, but intend first to understand your recent BeyondYes essay. You know Meatball is down in the WikiNow. Would you have any backup copy elsewhere in the WikiNet?
Just tested Dan’s WikiCalc. Think it will be useful to list expenses, revenues, balance, etc. It could be interesting to make usability-tests against alternative solutions as the GoogleOut?-office solution
[new:SamRose:2006-11-15 21:32 UTC]
Let me see what I can find for BeyondYes.
I think that Google Spreadsheets are probably easier to use than WikiCalc. But, I am all for us using ProWiki, OddMuse, and WikiCalc instead of google solutions. I want to support open source software, and support people who are trying to make tools for projects like ours. I talked to DanBricklin? on the phone earlier today (asked him for help setting up WikiCalc). He is interested in our use of WikiCalc for our project, and has offered support by phone or email.
One great thing about us using ProWiki, OddMuse, and WikiCalc, and other open source tools is that it gives us a set of tools that we know will be free and customizeable now and in the future. I am frankly many times fed up with proprietary social software companies who try and limit what you can do and how you can do it.
It’s very tempting to use Google’s slick tools. I use them for private use. But I really think that our project would benefit in the long run from creating platforms around OpenSource tools, combined with effective training for best uses of those tools as problems solving, knowledge base, and support systems.
[new:SamRose:2006-11-15 21:41 UTC]
Found it! Check out: http://consensuspolling.org/ http://www.omidyar.net/group/foodchain/ws/BeyondYes/
A TedErnst, and BrandonCsSanders project. I think that for areas wher voting is required, they have a greats system. But, for more rapid, and real time decision making, we can also employ a ConsensusGroup couple with SilentAgreement model, as discussed by HelmutLeitner on BeyondYes. I have copied the post out of Google cache from Meatball andpasted it into the local BeyondYes page. The long response I wrote to it is here: http://www.communitywiki.org/odd/SocialSynergy/2006-11-12 (it’s not in google cache). Me and TedErnst were discussing some different scenarios and ways of adjusting BeyondYes for different uses on Meatball. When Meatball is back up, I’ll try and jump back into that if you are reading this, Ted.
Christophe, I would like to humbly suggest that we discuss BeyondYes as a group, and maybe try to invite TedErnst and/or BrandonCsSanders if at all possible, for a future BarCampBankFlashmeeting?.
Also, I think that we can apply the Institute for The Future/HowardRheingolds/Cooperation Commons work on Rapid Decision Making both to ourselves, and to the way that we apply our DoTankInvestmentNetwork to people we work with. see: http://www.rheingold.com/cooperation/decisionmaking.pdf

[new:TedErnst:2006-11-16 22:23 UTC] What’s a BarCampBankFlashmeeting?? I’m intriqued.
[new:SamRose:2006-11-17 16:52 UTC]
Ted, looks like we are going to have it on this coming monday. All of the details are at BarCampBankFlashMeeting3. A flashmeeting is a video conference done using web-based flashvideo software. You’ll need a set of headphones, a microphone, and a web cam to participate. (You can just particiapte with voice and no web cam, which is currently how I do it, until I get a web cam). We already have a set agenda (TrustMetrics) for BarCampBankFlashMeeting3. But, of course you are welcome to sit in and participate so that you can get an idea of what these Flashmeetings will be like, if you want to. We have the video Then later on, perhaps during BarCampBankFlashMeeting4, or BarCampBankFlashMeeting5, or sometime in the future we can set you up to present BeyondYes ideas, if you are interested in doing that. I’d like to eventually have a Flashmeeting where we discuss porcesses like BeyondYes, and ConsensusPolling. And social norms, like DevolvePower, AssumeGoodFaith, ModelDesiredBehavior, and how they are effected by group size, the nature of the social network, and other decision making, conflict resolution, and CollectiveProblemSolving concepts, and how they are interweaved with the other concepts we are looking at (like Trust Metrics, etc).
[new:ChristopheDucamp:2006-11-21 20:17 UTC]
Hi Sam thanks for joining yesterday night. A very nice moment I really appreciate. I should be available during two days off planned next thursday and friday. Will try to translate/understand several documents in french like BeyondYes and ConsensusPolling which could be interesting for our governance discussion.
I really think Jean-Christophe gave us a strong VideoBridge pattern with an agenda very focuses, introduction via slides and a good follow-up to imagine with OriPekelman? and the KarmaInitiative? team.
Our next step during BarCampBank FlashMeeting 4 could be to talk of WhatCommunicationSoftwareToUse. Currently thinking of additional possible mashups which could be help to integrate future workers in the WikiNet :
Let’s say I’m really optimistic on this first group-seeding in the WikiNet. I’ll try to report soon to imagine our future divisions/comittees in small specialized groups/branches.
How about thinking to figure out/discuss a pattern for a future friendly BarCampFork? with BarCamp founders ? Cross pollinization is currently very poor. MashPit?, BuildingBlocks? and PinkoMarketing are IsolatedWikis from the hub even if they are WikiFriend… Really think specialized Barcamp vertical branches could emerge (like automotive, energy, education,…) in a WikiFractality/WikiNet architecture.
My current thinking is that this “banking” thinktank should be a model.
I simply hope BarCampBank could succeed this way to recruit fresh new passionate authors and workers and serve also our implied MissionStatement of WikiLove?.
[new:ChristopheDucamp:2006-11-25 11:07 UTC]
Hi Sam, hi all. I’d be happy to imagine our BarCampBankFlashMeeting4 in SecondLife but would need some guides and teachers to include a video StructuredMeeting? ? A first agenda has been suggested in french here and will be translated in english after refactoring. Any opinion/suggestion would be welcome. All CommunityWiki members are naturally welcome. Slides could be dropped on a SlideBliki or any others slideshare features.
[new:SamRose:2006-11-25 20:46 UTC]
xtof, I think SecondLife could be a great place to hold flashmeetings. We could do voice via SkypeCast, or we can use a conference system that I have used that allows calls from both Skype and regular telephones in both Europe and the US, both of which I have the ability to record. I have found and have been experimenting with Metalab Communal Whiteboard. This is one possibility.
Here is a snapshot of me in SecondLife with an image that I easily dragged onto the metalab whiteboard from my inventory:

All that we need is a space that allows us launch this object. I have been looking into finding a group of people who are interested in cooperatively purchasing an island in SecondLife for experimentation, meeting, potential business uses, etc. So, this might be something that we can eventually do with BarCampBank, or that BarCampBank can have access to, in any case.
Let’s try to figure out what our needs will be for a SecondLife BarCampBankFlashMeeting4.
Can you explain more about the SlideBlike? or SlideShare? features, and how we would use them to complete the agenda? Thanks!
[new:ChristopheDucamp:2006-11-28 08:24 UTC]
Hi Sam, hi all barcampbankers. Great, great news. Sorry for this lack of interaction but I’m just an OccasionalContributor currenty under a bit InformationOverload and really excited to read such good news. This WikiNet decentralization of conversations is very tough to follow and refactor. Too much ideas, innovation and productivity here and there.
“What is SlideBliki ?” is just a very small, simple and stupid application (as I love them) coined by LaurentLunati and dropped here to try to explain to newbies WhatIsaWiki. I tried last week-end to localize building blocks but the CSS is still complex. Think SlideBliki could be an interesting product to use TrustedLinkLanguage.
Let’s say I’m also completely fascinated by the metalab communal board perspectives and want to test it and imagine future mashups for desiging the wikipowerpoint.
People like MathieuCoste could perhaps schedule a french WikiWed? meeting on 6th December because I still have no idea to find out any places in Paris for CoWorking? spaces ?
How about…
- I’m currently investigating to ask RobertVinet to join. My machine is not sufficiently strong to make SecondLife test from home.Cheers Sam. And could we get in touch via shared calendars on 30boxes ?
[new:HansWobbe:2006-11-28 16:37 UTC] First; I must say, I am beginning to feel like a real “Luddite”, what with all of the different communications technologies that are being used to discuss these concepts. Since I don’t have the time to set up all of the suggested technologies such as Skype, SL (By the way, surly there are banks in SecondLife, even if they only work in Linden. Can anyone recommend one based on some real experience or an objective TrustMetric?), etc… I will use wikis to the extent that I can and HTML created using the ‘saveAs’ fiuunctions when that’s more efficient.
Hopefully this will allow me to post the ideas and concepts that some of my associates are sending me as Power Point presentations, simply because that is what they already have and what they know how to create. I am quite prepared to convert these via a simple saveAs (which works about 95% of the time) and to post them to reliable Read Only space on the ‘net so that everyone can link to them. I will even have them wrapped in ‘navigation’ pages if that helps us incorporate this type of material.
[new:SamRose:2006-11-29 20:22 UTC] (slipping past Hans, will return to reply to you, Hans
)
xtof, yes, I’ll set up 30 boxes calendar, of course.
I finally found my way to SlideBliki and now I see what you mean by this. It looks great, and I am interested in helping you and Laurent develop using this, of course (seems easy enough to co-create presentations in wiki) It is easy to put any image into Metalab. Although, developers may be interested in more code-based “mashups”, perhaps.
Skypecast can happen anytime you’d like. Although, if there are some people who do not possess Skype software, I can set up a bridge using Highspeedconferencing that will accept both Skypers and non-skypers in lieu of doing a Skypecast.
I agree with you xtof, that we need to refactor this page. It is huge. And, that is mstly my doing, so I’ll get to work on it.
[new:SamRose:2006-11-29 20:57 UTC]
Also, I have just now recvd my work schedule, and see that I will be at work throughout 6 décembre 2006 à 20h00 CET for CraoWiki:WikiSchoolParis. So, I will not be able to make that. But, I can still help with Skypecast, or Highspeed conferencing, if needed. Will sync up 30 boxes schedules soon.
[new:ChristopheDucamp:2006-11-30 11:06 UTC]
Bonjour Sam. No problem to report our meeting ! I’ll be back soon here and currently thinking how could be build up a wikinet-model to fork the barcamp canonical wiki. Currently at work, I’ll try to report later.
SamRose: refactoring now. Moving WikiCalc discussion to it’s own local WikiCalc page. Let us maybe keep this discussion in tact for a while, while we create some pages off of it, if that is ok?
