Discussion

This diagram is obviously far from complete, but I just wanted something to get the ball rolling.

I hope that this diagram, coupled with the concept of WikiNodes and the ProjectSpaceNetwork, explains some of my enthusiasm for the idea of the SvgWiki?. Just imagine if the diagram above were easily mutually editable, and hyperlinked. ..!

CraoWiki is a critical ommision at the moment, it’s just not there, because I had so long in the bus to draw. I’m torn between placing it next to MeatballWiki (WikiOnWiki,) and placing it next to the CCC (Europe.)

I also need better colors for the S-23 wiki. :)

You have no idea how much I wish we could all easily edit this. My knowledge is centric to my world. As in all map making exercises: Where it really starts to shine, is when we combine all of our maps..!

Another reason I bring this up is to pushramforce the SocialNetworking? discussion out of the realm of individuals.

The bonds between individuals by way of Group are far more enlightening than bonds from person to person to person to person.

 "LionKimbro -- AlexSchroeder -- SomeGuy"

Tells me very little.

 "LionKimbro --(CommunityWiki)-- AlexSchroeder --(EmacsWiki)-- SomeGuy"

AAAaaaah!

Now we’re talkin’!

My hope is that an example social diagram that focuses on groups will viscerally communicate my message far more than any amount of telling.

Another reason I bring this up is to point out the weakness of automatically generated maps.

Neat! I think c2: should be added soon since it is the Mother of all wikis. In fact, I’d even like to help, but …

I’ve been watching the buzz around SVG for a while now. I guess (assuming its not to late to teach this old dog new tricks) I’m at least prepared to give it a try. Care to point at a good starting spot?

Agreed, though I’m not sure that we have any immediate ties with C2. (DavidCary? Are you active with the C2 community?) We can just connect C2 with MeatballWiki, and not name any individuals with the link. (I don’t know that anyone in MeatballWiki is still active with C2, either. It’s just a historical link.)

SVG wiki does not exist yet; It is only an idea.

I’m actually rather surprised at the slow rate of Firefox SVG experimentation; It’s something where I’m thinking about taking a lead in, myself. Even just tutorials – there’s not much there. I think far more work has gone into getting SVG into Firefox, than all the work making use of it put together..!

But there’s a lot to be excited about, and it is very cool technology. I think if I wrote a little app or a tutorial, that it’s a good opportunity, it would get a lot of attention, and it could really spark something.

I’m putting off my SVG wiki estimations to 2007, no longer 2006. And it may be Canvas, instead, which came out of nowhere, and seems to have generated (not a whole lot, but:) a tad more excitement.

So, no. No SVG wiki yet. :) I wish!

So what software are you using to create these diagrams?

InkScape!

Inkscape Website: http://www.inkscape.org/

It’s incredibly awesome.

If you download it, make sure to go through the super-friendly, insightful tutorial series that come with it.

The controls are amazing.

This is very cool!

I need to put Omidyar there, too, with you and Brandon & Ethan & Luis pointing over there as well. :)

I like the map.

Adding C2 to the map: Yes, I’ve written quite a bit on C2. (Although sometimes I get the impression that the target audience of C2 is people who already know Lisp and/or Smalltalk. That leaves out people such as myself). Whoever set up MeatBall:ShortMessagesWikiWikiWeb apparently believes that C2 and Meatball are closely related.

I wonder if this map is big enough to squeeze add another circle for one or more of the following:

  • WikLossary (it budded off from CommunityWiki, right?)
  • WikiIndex, the wiki that indexes every other wiki (I contributed a batch of wiki, way back before it budded off from worldwidewiki)
  • the Oddwiki wikifarm
  • the taoriver wikifarm
  • … and perhaps other wiki on the WikiNode
  • what about non-wiki things like SlashDot and Google and Skype ?

But I suspect adding all of these would definitly make the map far too cluttered.

Technically, one SVG wiki does exist – if you count wiki that merely talk about SVG, rather than wiki that actually use SVG. (Gaa, I just noticed that someone renamed their wikinode from WikiNode to “Related_Wikis”. Not sure what to do about it.)

Just imagine if the diagram above were … hyperlinked. I’ve been told that SVG includes hyperlinks.

… OK, I’m going through the Inkscape tutorial … I’ll keep my eye out for hyperlinks …

The WikLossary would be a great addition! Then we can include HeatherJames, as well.

I’m not so sure about the OddWiki, or the TaoRiver? WikiHive for that matter as well, because they don’t have much of a “community” to them. That said, it’d be nice to see all the TaoRiver? wiki together.

AmberStraub was a little annoyed that she wasn’t on the map. Not sure I want to include “the Kimbro-Juliaos” family, though: not of general interest. She just wants to make sure she’s recognized for putting up with my lunacy. ;)

“Google” won’t do, because it’s not a clique or a community that we share an object with (“object” as described on SocialNetwork.)

Yes, SVG supports hyperlinks. And yes, InkScape supports hyperlinking drawing elements.

If every community created such a map we (big we) would be able to map the hive mind. In permanent movement, permanent change, like an amoeba. Amazing Lion. Great starter.

“I also need better colors for the s23-wiki. :)” Strange, I don’t think so. The color hits it. It’s like a sheet of black paper. Maybe the map is even there but you can’t see it. It’s different there. It takes seeing what’s drawn in the right angle to the light to differentiate between the graphite lines and the paper or maybe use polarized light or so. Dunno, not yet. Patience. Don’t force it. That spoils it, guaranteed.

Hey, what does this link on the bottom mean “Introducteurs” ?? If it is to play with the Poietic aggregator, http://anoptique.org/MetaWikis would be much more interesting ;-)

Again nothing all that useful to add, but it’s way, way cool and getting better! :-)

Hey, these kinds of diagrams would look neat on WikiNodes too :) (though agreed, this isn’t only about Wikis - CommunityNodes? ?)

If more like this are done, conventions for representing various communities might emerge (using colours and fonts that look like their CSS style, having SVG logos for those like Meatball (And CW!) who do have a logo, etc.

neat idea Emile to drop such a card on our WikiNodes. Just tried a first attempt on CraoWiki:CarteSocialeCraoWikiAvril2006 with Gliffy (a Flash cooperative diagram editor with version histories… - you can also export the image on SVG and jpg). It’s ugly I know, but you can test Gliffy to modify our craowiki-social-map via this PublicAccount :

MarkDilley - couldn’t get on… still no…

brilliant, Emile. Let’s put it on the wiki-node!

Hm, yes, community-node is more precise.

I want to extend out the bottom to the Berkman institute (which is doing a lot of organized Identity work,) and the various other identity communities. The EvolutionarySalon shares several ties with the various ID communities, and it’s an interesting territory. We also connect with PlaNetWork?, and I suspect the SeattleMindCamp overlaps as well. IMC is in there, too; Sheri was one of the first major IMC people, who I know through the Evolutionary Salon.

I haven’t heard from Brandon in a while, but I KNOW he’s up to stuff. (IBESI stuff.)

I’d also like to extend this map to include:

  • Adrian’s Open-Leader (& myriad other) network
  • New Civilization Network (NCN, Flemming Funch)

Adrian’s society is very large and complicated, I very much wish that someone on the inside would make a social map of it, so that I can get a sense of who’s there and what they’re doing, and such. It’s just huge.

The Evolutionary Salon network and Imagine Cascadia are just starting.

I understand that two people here (ThomasKalka, HelmutLeitner) have some connection with the Open-Leader hive; It’s something I’d like to know more about, and work with. I’m really impressed (amazed, actually) with what is going on over there.

By Adrian you mean AndriusKulikauskas ?

This page inspired me to to term “Diplomats” or “NetworkDiplomats?”. This are people which are familiar with several networks and thus are able to act as communication bridges.

Building some MachineReadableSemantics? into (this?) wiki it would be possible to draw social maps automatically (by GraphViz? ?).

I would love to see an open database of diplomats …

My faith in automatically generated social maps up to, say, at least 2015 technology, is very low.

Yes, I am talking specifically about AndriusKulikauskas: I would like to rework the map to point to the Open-Leaders Network, or whatever it’s called. NCN should be there as well.

I really want to understand the Open-Leaders network. I get confused a lot, looking through the maze of pages over there.

(The confusion may be similar, people looking over here, onto CW.)

The best way to help yourself and us on OpenCulture / OpenLeaders? is to ask questions on the pages …

Andrius repeatedly asks on the pages, “e-mail me!” So, I’ve done it a few times now. But, no reply – I guess he’s just very busy right now.

I’ll ask some questions on those pages, and see what’s going on.

AFAIK Andrius is currently “on road” meeting people (probably Vienna at te moment) and may not be that responsive. In general his rhythm of communication is rather slow, maybe 2-3 days to answer an e-mail or posting. The various mailing-lists are probably the best ways to get in contact, because these are his primary tools to hold the network together. You might like e. g.

Along the lines of what Mattis was talking about, I am trying to figure out if InkScape images are somehow co-editable if you save them in SVG form?

I think it would be interesting to have images that are co-editable similar to wiki pages. Perhaps someone is already doing something like this?

Somewhere I read, that InkScape has built in support for CollaborativeEditing? (with Jabber-Protocol ?).

Source code for this image was uploaded to:

 http://www.communitywiki.org/en/download/SocialMapApril2006Source

In general, just attach “Source” instead of “Image” at the end, and you’ll get the SVG data.

Yes, Inkscape supports live collaborative editing, via Jabber. However, I’ve only ever seen the option on Linux, and I’m not quite sure how to use it. (This applies to both .43 and .44.)

v.44 added Python scripts working on Windows, and I want to adapt my ZergCreep code (the code I have so far at any rate) that is good at pushing images (I use it to send images to CW, for example) so that it works, built in, to Inkscape.

That way, you’d just do “Save” or “Load,” pick the .CW (“community wiki”) file format, and then it would save to or load from CW. (Export & upload both .png and .svg, and import .svg.)

Did WikiPedia fall of the map (it has become the AntiWiki?), or is it just too big for the map?

Hm; I think it’s just that we, bona fida, don’t have any connections with WikiPedia!

Maybe through Meatball, but: I don’t know that we have any Meatball regulars who are also major wikipedians..!
