ControlledVocabulary

A ControlledVocabulary is a set of words1 chosen to formally represent some domain. For instance, if you had a library and you defined a fixed set of keywords with which to index the books in the card catalog, that set of keywords would be a controlled vocabulary.

Discussion

They're also useful in any software project, or even material world project.

When I was testing at ********, we had to make sure that the names of the buttons on the controllers were always the same, and presented exactly the same way in the dialogs on the console.

The company makes sure that it's all always the same way. (Exceptions made for some very special case games.)

In the LocalNamesProject?, I eventually had to make a ControlledVocabulary list, because the names were getting out of hand, and people weren't sure what I was referring to when I talked about things.

Should this be distinguished from a SharedVocabulary?/SharedLanguage??

There are different types of controlled vocabularies. An orthogonal vocabulary has zero overlap and guarantees to reach each and every point within the semantic application space. The ideal would be a minimal one.

Well, a ControlledVocabulary is not just one that is shared, but rather one that is artificially formalized and controlled. You would say that English speakers have a shared vocabulary, but not a controlled one.
