Portrait I develop Oddmuse and run the Emacs Wiki. I have a blog.

I live in Zürich, Switzerland. I have a 60% job as a software engineer. German is my first language.

See my About and my Contact pages if you need more information.

Essential stuff:

  1. The WikiWay doesn’t scale well, and maybe it doesn’t need to. A wiki for a group of friends is good enough for me, as long as the content is interesting and the people are nice. Therefore I don’t plan to scale.
  2. Design matters. Plain and drab just doesn’t cut it. Of course we don’t want FormOverContent because we are not market droids. Aesthetics is for everybody.
  3. Multilingual sites, yes. Multilingual pages, no.
  4. :) Diagrams! =) Diagrams... :) :D !! :) Visual Language! Zap! Bamm! <3 <3 <3 8D 8D !!!
  5. Complex diagrams require explanation. That’s what makes them interesting. Use them instead of a slideshow or instead of a paper for a poster session. They don’t have to stand on their own.
  6. Simple diagram have to be memorable. Use them to make a point in a talk.

Dear Alex, Thank you for maintaining the CommunityWiki. And the OddWiki.

The InformationOverload page links to WikisVsInformationOverload.

The “View other revisions” doesn’t show anything good, but I suspect that there used to be some good content and somehow Oddmuse:Kept_Pages decided to delete that good content.

Would you please look through your offline archives and, if you can find a good version of WikisVsInformationOverload, restore it?

Thank you.

Hi David – if you look at the history of the page, you’ll find that revision 1 is spam. I therefore assume that this used to be a WantedPage and got created by spammers.

Yes, that is the most likely explanation. However, what if something like this happened:

  • perhaps LionKimbro wrote a great page at WikisVsInformationOverload.
  • then some spammer deleted all that good content and replaced it with spam.
  • then some well-meaning individual saw that page, now filled with nothing but spam, and slapped the “DeletedPage” tag on it, not realizing that there was good stuff in the older history.
  • The DeletedPage reaper deletes the page and all its history.
  • some spammer sees that WikisVsInformationOverload is now a WantedPage, and creates revision 1 as spam.

The end result would be the same as what I see now, right?

Would you please look through your offline archives and, if you can find a good version of WikisVsInformationOverload, restore it?

Thank you.

In the scenario you describe the revision numbers would not start with 1. That’s why I’m convinced that no content has been lost.

I also don’t keep any systematic backups of the site. All there is I presume is the backup made by the admins of the host. But I won’t bother them with this.

Sorry to disappoint you.

Thank you for the explanation. I’m glad that no information was actually lost.
