SynonymRing

A SynonymRing is a listing of synonymous terms. For example, if you want to tell your software "when someone searches for "Si", give them the result of searching for (Si OR silicon)", the data stucture that says "Si = silicon" is a synonym ring.

If you are using a SynonymRing as part of a SearchEngine, then your criteria for what is a synonym is part of the PrecisionRecallTradeoff. By liberally accepting "near synonyms" you can increase recall at the expense of precision. On the other hand, by accepting terms as synonyms only if they are nearly exactly the same, then you can increase precision at the expense of recall.
