CategoryReasoning

This category discusses the process of reasoning.

The limits of logic and rationality

Many of the pages in this category are about rationality, and specifically, about how most useful reasoning isn’t rational.

ReasonAndLogic is a poem about the differences between reason and logic– reason is wild, tricky, enlightening, divergent, convergent, lifelike, whereas logic is methodical calculation, and generally unenlightening outside mathematics.

ThinkingGoo shows how, despite people’s opinions about their thought process, people usually aren’t rational. It then goes on to discuss what other sorts of procedure they are using to reason. ConservationOfRationality discusses how rationality is expensive, and how as a result most cognitive systems, both in individuals and groups, are not completely rational.

KnowledgeIsBasedInTrust presents the viewpoint that most knowledge is grounded not in reality, but rather in trust that certain “facts” are true. WhatKnowledgeDeservesTrust then goes on to discuss which knowledge should be trusted, and deals especially with which kinds of knowledge one can be certain of.

RationalIrrationality presents some instances where “it’s rational to be irrational”, and also discusses some examples of GroupThink. BeyondRational also presents some situations where it is good to be irrational. SelectivelyOpenMinded examines situations when complete open-mindedness is not desirable.

ParadoxOfExpression is about how statements have severe limitations (WordsAreClumsy,) and how this cannot be “fixed.” Not only statements, but all mechanisms of thinking and institutionalizing, and communications are never finished. Warfare as a manifestation of the inability to communicate.
