LionKimbro liked this story. I didn’t (I don’t tend to like Cory Doctrow’s stuff).

I thought of this story when I saw the following spam on the Parliament development wiki:

Excuse for my post but I do not have money to buy meal to my children. Forgive me please. pharmacy pharmacy pharmacy pharmacy pharmacy pharmacy pharmacy pharmacy (etc… in the real spam those were links)

Unlike the characters in the story presumably would have done, I had no sympathy and deleted the spam anyway.

I don’t think the characters in the story would have done any differently.

Further, you have no way of knowing whether the claim is true or not.

Yeah, I was being sarcastic about them not doing that.

But the similarities are striking. What if I found out it was true? What if he got paid less when i deleted his comment?

Some people look at real, physical war in economic terms. My understanding is that the “Cold War” was more about economics than about killing people. From an economics point of view, an online “war” could theoretically be bigger than some historical wars, because the online game economy is already bigger than some national economies. (FIXME: link to article that says the Everquest economy is already larger than some national economies)

''Virtual Land, Real Money'' describes people making real money working “in” SecondLife. Life imitates art?

When I first encounter a new communication technology (telephone, radio, television, internet, cellphone, videophone, etc.), I think it will help communicate more information, helping me empathize more with other people, and helping me confirm or deny rumors I’ve heard about their area.

Alas, my experience with email spam makes me very skeptical of anything I get via email, and I fear my skepticism is starting to bleed over into other areas. Is that scene I see on the TV news really typical of the situation, or was this carefully selected out of millions of feet of footage to construct a carefully crafted piece of propaganda? Are oranges really good for you, or is this a PR campaign by orange orchard owners?

I know I’m overreacting a bit. HypeAndEnthusiasm.

What if I find out … he got paid less when i deleted his comment? Interesting question. It may take him more time and effort to convince me of this fact, than to cut his losses, and spam elsewhere. But if he somehow convinced us of the truth of the situation … then what should our response be?
