community-wiki: blog

The community-wiki now has a day-page set called blog to syndicate it’s “summary” to other wikis.

Here’s a description of some things that have happened in the last few months.

We’ve been visited by AndrewHoerner. Andrew is Director of Research at Redefining Progress, a sustainability think-tank oriented toward finding solutions that simultaneously promote a strong economy, a healthy environment, and a just society. He does great work for causes we believe in.

He came by to discuss StrategicDialogSupportSoftware, for use at a project he calls the Convergence Institute for Essential Change. The software is intended to support the conversations they have, and communicate them to the world. We gave him our advice, but we also roped him down for a conversation about the source of ethics, that came to be known as the EthicsDiscussion.

You know we love VisualLanguage; Be sure to see the SourceOfEthicsImage that came up as part of Lion’s articulation of a NaturalisticSourceOfEthics.

We have formalized our decision making process into the CommunityWikiBylaws, to make it clear how exactly CommunityWiki is governed!

“Why did you do this?” Basically, there are situations that test authority on the CommunityWiki, and it’s hard to justify decisions at times when newcomers greatly outnumber core members. You can read more about it on CommunityWikiGovernmentMotivation.

The bylaws aren’t ratified yet, but they’re almost so. It’s been a long process of writing up rules, justifying them, garnering agreement and support, and so on.

SamRose has introduced a number of ideas centered around his concept of a LiteracyOfHumanNature, and social theories such as CausalLayeredAnalysis. Sam, Lion, and Helmut have also been discussing the ParadoxOfExpression, OpenTheory, PatternTheory, PatternLanguage, in a series of conversations about procedure, goals, problems, in conversation itself.

SamRose has introduced us to ideas about organizations and human values stemming from Clare Graves, via his LiteracyOfHumanNature. Basically, the view is that human nature is a complex, constantly evolving coping system that is constantly either adapting itself, or its environment.

Sam has also introduced us to the CausalLayeredAnalysis of populations and media. In super-brief, it provides language and insigght into four stages of human media exposure: 1. Litany, (the Masses,) who read newspapers and feel fear. 2. Journal writers, who write intellectual articles about world affairs. 3. Framers, who analyze the framing and structures of thought that are involved in problems. 4. Mythologists, who use art as their medium for grappling with the fundamental tensions and problems at work in society.

Yet another thing he’s shown us is the EcosystemOfNetworks, which has stunning descriptive power for describing SocialNetworks? from the small to large range. The diagram of the Ecosystem of Networks elegantly integrates Reed’s Law, Metcalf’s Law, and Sarnoff’s Law. This should be of interest to SocialNetworks? people.

Out of these pages have sprung a number of other pages, that are very interesting, if this is your sort of thinking.

Sam, Lion, and Helmut have also been discussing the ParadoxOfExpression, OpenTheory, PatternTheory, PatternLanguage, in a series of conversations about procedure, goals, problems, in conversation itself.

Lion has focused on the LackOfReworking, and come to the idea that a ConversationProcess really needs to designate someone to be the maintainer for a page, (DesignatedMaintainerProcess,) in order for reworking to actually happen. There is some evidence that this has worked on CommunityWiki, and it is not dissimilar to the conclusions of others; In particular, the Art of Hosting crowd. [1] [2]

MattisManzel has been busy with the WikiNet since May 06 making first attempts to introduce it on community-wiki on BlogPages now.
