DonateTimeOrMoney

Most NonGovernmentOrganization?s (NGO) depend on contributions by members and supporters (some also just run projects funded by other NGOs or by the state). Contributions usually take the form of either money or time. When donating time, people work without financial recompensation.

Generally, people will prefer to donate money if their wage is higher than the wages of the actual helpers hired to do the work for them. This allows them to help efficiently.

This also explains the difficulty of FreeSoftware projects. On the one hand, their product is used by many people and immediately recognized as being useful; at the same time, however, people have a hard time donating money to finance software projects. There is no human suffering involved, there is no real urgency (since the current version usually works), and -- and this is the point this page is all about -- not many people earn significantly more than software developers. Thus, it makes immediate sense for other software developers to donate some time and report bugs, fix bugs, and write new features, but it makes little sense for them to donate money for another software developer who earns the same wage and does for a living what normal software developers love to do: Working on a labor of love.

Many humanitarian organizations can call upon a large force financially weak supporters that are willing to donate time: Students, housewives, elderly people. These supporters are unable to donate much money, but they can hand out flyers, collect signatures for a referendum, organize demonstrations, work as a secretary, sending begging-letters, sending thank-you-letters, etc. This requires little know-how but lots of time.

When soliciting contributions by supporters, be sure to allow people to donate time instead of money.

Donating time is easier for poorer people. And so it is with this wiki: You could of course send some money to support it, but you could just spend a few minutes fixing typos, linking pages up and down the hierarchy, or contribute a comment or a new page.
