(caution: ThePowerOfQuestions)
We've talked about avatars a few times here, I figure it's about time we get a page for it.
I don't like the title, but I'm applying it for the sake of harmony with Meatball's terminology.
I earnestly and sincerely hope society goes with avatars in the future. It'll be a richer (and fairer,) world. (Fairer in both senses of the word.)
As BCI tech develops, we will be forced to go with avatars; Nobody wants to talk with a brain in a vat. The question in my mind is whether they we will make them resemble our older selves or not.
I'm for diversity in appearance, but always dress conservatively. (And I resent this.)
In some ways, I think putting on a different form is a deeper form of nudism than nudism.
Just out of curiosity, what do you mean you resent it? Do you resent dressing conservatively (if so, why/why do you do it)?
I think it's some sort of CognitiveDissonance?.
We dress conservatively because we have to.
Many kids, (certainly not all, but many,) from as soon as they can pick their own clothing, all the way up through college, choose their clothing.
We have special occasions in society which are times and places where people can get rid of that cognitive-dissonance gap: Halloween parties, concerts, etc.,. It's called "showing your colors."
But it's not appreciated in general- it's too noisy!
