CommunityType

A good summary of various community types is found on JoiIto's wiki [1]:

  1. difference between "online communities" and "communities of practice"
  2. difference between "community" and "audience"

Communities of practice develop their shared practice by interacting around problems, solutions, and insights, and building a common store of knowledge. [2]

An audience differs from a community by the lack of an upper limit. Like radio, the number of recipients with read-only access is unlimited. The size of the community itself (the "members") is limited, however. [3]

This reminds me of the difference between a SocialWiki and a FocusWiki, or TopicallyFocusedWiki?. Wiki categorization could easily be a wiki in itself..!

Let's note that wiki can also differ by:

I seem to remember somewhere in wikiland a discussion about how to tune "the rules", what the effects of different rules were (the "jump right in: BeBold" vs. "take a month to Wiki:LurkBeforeYouLeap") … The funniest rules I've seen so far are at http://fora.chickennation.com/ (OK, so technically it's not a wiki … but I like the way he handles the RealNamesPlease controversy)

CategoryMembership

I've seen about people who work on highly technical issues and overcome a lot of obstacles together making them a team linked by the same target. This link is strenghtening the relationship between the elements. This is a very interesting colateral effect caused by the engagement of human beings in the same workforce team, TestTeamCommunity.
